Essay Paper on Constructivist Approach to Learning
by Imogen Hayes
Constructivism is a theory, used to clarify how people “know what they know”. It rolls around the idea that problem solving is at the core of thinking and progress. Usually as people solve problems and get results of their proceedings through their past experiences and their knowledge they construct their own perceptions. A constructivist approach to learning and instruction has been projected as an option to the “objectivist model”, which is implied in almost all behavior, attitude and several cognitive approaches to teaching. Objectivism sees knowledge as a passive sign of the outside, “objective reality”. This involves a process of “instruction,” to make sure that the learner receives accurate information (State University, 2011).
Constructivist Assessment of learners learning could be “Formative or Summative”. The first takes place during learning and offers feedback to the learner. It comprises assessments of current folders and revelations of the work in evolution. Student group effort also presents a shape of formative assessment. This kind of assessment not often appears classrooms. “Summative assessment” occurs through tests and assignments, it gives low feedback. Constructivists find formative assessments to be more precious to learners, but with the recent emphasis and due to the poor configuration of constructivist approaches, it is very hard to synchronize both “formative and summative” assessments (State University, 2011).
