Emotional Intelligence: Is Emotional Intelligence Important in the Development of Leaders?
Natural leaders also show strength during their childhood and teen years, in a positive and/or negative way, but always managed to take control of situations either at school or in a working environment. Since these talented individuals started leading at a young age, this strength has made them who they were during their time period. There are many leadership models that different leaders choose to utilize, which makes the style of every leader unique but emotional intelligence is of vital importance for all them.A major civil rights leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner was one of the world’s biggest, youngest, black leaders. Martin Luther King Jr. was born in 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia and ever since a young age he had the ability to speak. He started leading at a young age, by being an eloquent Baptist minister. Having a family background of strong, intelligent people helped to lead Martin Luther King Jr. to his extraordinary abilities as a leader. King’s grandfather was a Baptist preacher, and his father was pastor of Atlanta’s Ebenezer Baptist Church. Being raised by such wise and religious men, his father and grandfather, he helped millions of American people get the freedom they deserved. King was also a very intelligent man, earning his own Bachelor of Divinity degree from Crozier Theological Seminary in 1951 and earned his Doctor of Philosophy from Boston University in 1955. He also won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for all of his unanticipated efforts during the civil rights movement.
During the civil rights movement he had major roles in the march on Washington, Montgomery bus boycott, and inspired many fellow Americans by writing the “ Letter From Birmingham Jail”, and his famous “ I Have a Dream” speech. With his intelligence, he was able to do all of this with non-violent protests because he was looking out for his fellow people’s safety and of the others who were against him. His next battle was in Selma, Alabama, where he led a voter-registration campaign that eventually led to the Selma-to-Montgomery Freedom March. By starting this movement, eventually African Americans received the right to vote. The day of his assassination, anyone who was alive remembers where they were the moment they heard King was dead. An ignorant man who was afraid to learn and grow together as a nation decides to take a gun and take away a great leader like King from millions of people.
King became the symbol of America, equal rights, and freedom of all races and nationalities. He made America a place where we could start to all live together as one nation and eventually learn to love each other. Everyone will always remember how powerful, intelligent, and determined Martin Luther King Jr. was to bring together, what was at the time separate nations, to one productive and caring nation.
