American Psychologist Association and Association for Psychological Science

In the modern world full of stresses and challenges the profession of a psychologist becomes increasingly acute. The number of students who chose to study psychology has also considerably increased.

There are two main websites that concern psychology. These are the website of the American Psychologist Association and Association for Psychological science. This essay will focus on the content and peculiarities of the abovementioned websites.

American Psychologist Association

There are three main sections of this website: Psychologists, Students, and Media. Each of them covers material for a different target group. The section “psychology topics” contains a glossary, different psychology topics from A to Z. Also there is a very important sub-section “Find a psychologist”. There is a search menu which one can fill in with his postal address to find a practicing psychologist in his neighborhood.
Another sub-section goes under the name of “Patient bills of rights”. This is a general statement covering the right and responsibilities of a patient. The first line of this statement reads as follows:

“Our commitment is to provide quality mental health and substance abuse services to all individuals without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, gender, age, sexual orientation, or disability.”

APA defines a psychologist as an expert in psychology, the systematic investigation of the human mind, including behavior, cognition, and affect. Psychologists are usually categorized under a number of different fields, the most well-recognized being clinical psychologists, who provide mental health care and conduct substantive and applied research.

APA defines its mission in the following way: “The objects of the American Psychological Association shall be to advance psychology as a science and profession and as a means of promoting health, education, and human welfare by the encouragement of psychology in all its branches in the broadest and most liberal manner, the promotion of research in psychology and the improvement of research methods and conditions, the improvement of the qualifications and usefulness of psychologists through high standards of ethics, conduct, education, and achievement, the establishment and maintenance of the highest standards of professional ethics and conduct of the members of the Association, the increase and diffusion of psychological knowledge through meetings, professional contacts, reports, papers, discussions, and publications, thereby to advance scientific interests and inquiry, and the application of research findings to the promotion of health, education, and the public welfare.”

Press/mass media section contains an archive of press releases and contact information. Also, there are acute and up-to-date press releases of the Association.
