Essay Paper on Critical Thinking Personal Barriers

For this paper I chose the following two personal barriers to critical thinking. The barriers are Self-Concept and Emotional Influences. For self-concept I chose my opinion of myself being fat. For emotional influences I chose the events of September 11th 2001.

SELF-CONCEPT

Self-concept can cloud a person’s judgment when that judgment is in reference to an issue witch deals with their appearance, finance, or other aspects of their personal life. For me I have many issues with my life but I am going to focus on my obsession when it comes to my weight.

I always remember myself being the skinny kid, everyone use to call me stick boy. For 10 years my metabolism was in full gear and I could eat anything I wanted and not gain any weight, this left me with a 28” waist and a unhealthy weight of 125 pounds. As I began to move into my mid 20’s I started to notice a change in my metabolism, it started to slow down and I began to gain weight.

In a period or 3 years I went from 125 pounds to 170 pounds, which is where I current reside. When I look in the mirror all I see is a fat, ugly, and unhealthy person. I look at myself and wonder how I let myself get this way. This way of thinking had led me to pull back on my personal life and almost become a recluse. All my friends and acquaintances told me that I was not fat and that I actually looked the healthiest I had in my entire life. I did not believe them I thought you are not my friends you are lying to me just look at this.

At am not sure when but one day I actually had an moment of clarity that one has maybe two or three times in their life. This clarity brought with it the notion that I was not fat, ugly, or unhealthy, but it did bring a respect for you I am as a person which has led me to believe that I am a handsome average build young man who has never been healthier.
