Telecommuting: is it good enough for everyone?
Over the recent years it gets more and more popular to work from home. There is no need for employees to go to the office any more – now you can work successfully sitting comfortably in your room, your kitchen, or even lying in your bed. But on the other hand, if you choose to work from home, be ready for a number of disadvantages: you will stay alone with your computer and, maybe, family for long hours without a change of surroundings. However, if lack of communication does not frighten you, go on – telecommuting is for you!
To begin with I would like to highlight the positive side of the matter. Imagine, from now on you don’t need to get up early in the morning to get ready for your working day, squeeze through the crowd into the public transport, stay in your office for at least 8 hours, where everybody is trying to distract you from work, speaking loudly, asking you questions all the time, making noise by moving around. You will not spend another hour to get home absolutely exhausted with the only dream to get something to eat, to have shower and go to bed immediately in order to repeat the same routine the next day.

On the other hand, if you work from home you can manage your time the way you like. You can do the most urgent tasks immediately and leave others for the time of the day when you have an inspiration – be it at night, or, on the contrary, early in the morning. If the weather is fine, you can go for a walk during the day, you can go shopping, do some sports, spend the time with your family and children. This does not mean, of course, that you don’t have to work. The thing is that you can do it, when you think you can concentrate well, and when nobody bothers you. For me personally, the best time for productive work is at night, when you can stay in silence, face-to-face with your thoughts. Besides, you can take your laptop wherever it is comfortable for you and plunge into your work.

However, if you are a sociable person who likes to demonstrate new clothes and styles every day in order to be appreciated by colleagues, this kind of job may be a bit boring and unsatisfactory for you. It may happen also, that you don’t have necessary working conditions at home or your family members do not understand you and distract you in all possible ways, thinking your job is not serious. As a result, it becomes impossible to fulfill tasks on time. Besides, not every kind of job can be done from home. Sometimes, you might also need special equipment, apart from a computer and internet connection – you might need a webcam, a fax machine or other office devices.

Therefore, there is both a positive and a dark side of telecommuting – it depends only on your personal likes and dislikes to vote for or against it. To work at home you should possess perfect time-management and self-motivation skills, as well as to be task oriented. If you are a person like that, and if you like to organize your working day on your own, you should definitely apply for a telecommuting job.
